Best Freelance Websites to Start your Freelancing Career

Starting a freelance business is the easiest way to make money through online resources. May it be an extra income or an income for your living, this would be a great career choice. This is the reason why millions and millions of people are making their entry into freelancing these days. With the plenty of online freelance resources available, it’s difficult for us to find the best sources to start off. Many websites claim that they are the best for freelancers, but we need to remember that everything cannot be best. There are few really good websites to start a freelance business and they are mentioned below:

freelance career

Upwork, which was formerly ‘oDesk’, has more than 12 million registered freelancers and more than 5 million registered clients with them. ‘oDesk’ was collaborated with another freelancing giant ‘Elance’ during the year 2014 to launch the all-new freelancing website, ‘Upwork’. This is a huge freelancing platform today with more than three million jobs posted every year. The numbers of freelancers, as well as the clients, are continuously increasing from year to year. This huge expansion is because of the reputation as the most trusted among the people from all corners of the world. The features like ‘Local Business Resources’ and Upwork Pro’ are found to be attractive for the new freelancers. So, I would say that this is the best place for launching your freelance career.

I would say this is the best website to start if you are a seasoned and talented freelancer. This website was developed by engineers and is working quite differently compared to the other freelance websites out there. Upon registering with Toptal, you will have to pass a screening process passing of which would give you access to work with outstanding projects from the companies like:

  • JPMorgan
  • Zendesk
  • Airbnb

It’s to be noted that, you can earn a fair compensation as there is ‘no low-bid contests’ in Toptal. Furthermore, you can also join the Toptal community through various meet ups and events.

Although this website is not so attractive when compared with above two websites, continues to be the largest freelancing website in the world. This is due to the feature of this website which allows the freelancers to compete with each other in contests to prove their skills. Therefore, if you are really confident with your skills, you can compete with millions of freelancers in a contest and showcase your abilities. I would say that Freelancer is the best site to get your first freelancing client.

This is another freelance website with more than 1.5 million registered users from across the globe. The best feature of this website is that this would allow you to showcase your past experience and would keep you updated with the new job offers that match your skills and abilities. This way, you would not miss out any opportunities that are suitable for you. Another feature called ‘Guru Work Room’ would enable to manage all your projects.

Women in Freelancing : Personal Experience

Freelancing sounds like a great idea to many people, no bosses to answer to and setting own time to work. There is a lot that has been said about freelancing with different individuals siting different experiences. Bottom line is that one needs to understand well what freelancing is all about. Some have tried and failed while others have been very successful. It is important to note that when one has a new idea or has heard about something of interest, proper research should be conducted. Sufficient knowledge will help avoid one to make mistakes they will regret. So if you are employed don’t just jump into the wagon without proper research on freelancing.

Female freelancers

Being a female freelancer is my point of interest as I speak from my own experience. I learnt of freelancing way back in Campus (quite some years back). Never gave it much thought at that time, when a student is about to graduate they have big dreams (great job and a good salary). However, my dream was to be self-employed; I loved programming and thought I could set up my software development company. How that went down is a topic for another day. Back to freelancing, over the years I have done lots of freelancing in different fields. The urge to be my own boss resulted to settling in freelancing. There are many sites offering online jobs that one can register as a member and bid for jobs. Locally there are other jobs that one can get from friends, family and even small businesses. This is so because technology is one field that offers many opportunities for freelancers.

As a female freelancer and a mother for that matter, I have had quite a good experience (but it’s not all smooth). It may take some time getting what fits own taste, but it’s the best way to earn an income while taking care of your kids. Today it’s so difficult getting a good person to leave your kids with (the horrifying stories of kids mistreatment are nauseating) so most choose to be stay at home moms. But what do u do with the bits of free time you have when the kids are napping and you are done with house chores. When the kids are of age to go to school there is a lot of free time that can be utilized to earn extra bucks.

Tips for freelancing mums

Freelancing is all good, especially for mothers but the main challenge is always time. Unfortunately, as a mother one is not guaranteed consistent hours for freelance work in a day. Therefore, one has to plan how to properly utilize the time available. In my experience there are days that one can hardly get ample time to do anything constructive. However, there are other days one has so much time. The best thing to do would be to use the time resourcefully and avoid wasting time on TV or social media. A list of things to accomplish is very useful when one has free time. Tasks can be broken down to short intervals especially when one has small kids who are in the house. Balancing between work and parenting is no easy task but the most important thing is timing, use time wisely.

5 Things About Freelancing – Be a Professional Freelancer

For many people, freelancing area is a new way of life. At some point in time, this work area will probably become one of the most wanted work style. As a Freelancer, as many other fields, has its advantages and disadvantages. We will talk about some of them in today’s article.

Also, before you decide to start working as a freelancer, you need to know some important things about this field that you will depend on your future career. Each of them helps you to become even more professional than before and help you to have more success. In addition, there are things that will help you understand better what it means to be a freelancer.

1.       This Work is Only For Young People

True and false. Even if you need a lot of knowledge, many people are not taking freelancing serious. Probably because what they consider work is staying with other people in the same office or working outside with other people. Face to face and not computer to computer. They need to always have somebody telling them what to do and they need to talk with people in person. This is their only way to define work. But freelance activity if for every person who wants to make money online and who has a lot of knowledge in some field.

2.       Only Programmers Make Money

False. All kind of people can make money from freelancing but the biggest and only requirement is knowing how to do something. It can be about copywriting, design, programming, marketing or any other area. You just need to provide quality and reliability services, to be good at what you are doing and you can make money easily.

3.       Any Freelancer is Working From Bed

True and false. This thing is only up to you. If you like to work this way, very good but most people chose to work from an office room or rent because it has its advantageous. Because quality of work is better when you work from an office, this is the most recommended way to work as a freelancer. You should make a work schedule so you have time for everything, just like a normal job. Therefore, try and test those methods and see which suits you better.

4.       Freelancers are Working Less

Definitely false. The difference between freelancers and employees is that the first ones are making their own schedule, there is no limit on work hours/day or week, they don’t have a boss telling them every day what to do and they can always skip a day if they don’t feel like working. In addition, you can work as a freelancer part-time, but there are people who really depend on this job.

5.       Freelancing is Not For Everybody

False. Anyone can change and adapt for this work. You probably read that you will be working more and harder than the average employee person but this thing is not true. You will make your own schedule and work as long as you want.

Therefore, if you find this work field interesting, you need to take full advantage because you will definitely not regret it.

Challenges of a Female Freelancer

I hate bosses and keeping office hours, I hate waking up early. Well psychologists say there are morning and evening persons (Morning people and Night Owls). Most people can tell what type of person they are. Being a night owl self-employment was the best option, of course due to flexible working hours. Choosing to go the self-employment way was not all easy though. Especially since there is no guarantee that you will get a gig (read work) or even get paid after all the hard work. It is has not been easy setting up a business and to avoid going broke freelancing became the easier option.

Freelancing fields

There are many fields where freelancing is predominant such as web development, consulting, acting, writing, computer programming, event management, cosmetics, translating and many others.  I prefer web development, writing, oh and consulting too. Getting clients is a bit tough but when equipped with the right skills and a mindset to succeed one is good to go.

However, freelancing especially as a woman can be quite challenging. The main challenge from my experience is dealing with male clients. As a female web developer I have dealt with a couple of male clients, some I have taken the job while others you just have to let go. Being in a field where men dominate a lot of male clients do not take one serious. Some are just time wasters, am sure they just look at a woman and wonder if she can really develop anything. The worst types of clients are those who are disrespectful, to them a woman is only good in other ways. Well I have had to make some ruthless comments.

Challenges As Freelancer

Kids can be challenging for women who choose to go the freelancing way. As much as you plan your time, kids especially when they are little can present what in my words I like to call a “challenging challenge”.  Kids are quite a blessing but they have a way of messing things up. One can never really plan their behavior like the sleeping time, how fast they eat, when to be quiet and calm. The worst is when they become unwell. Ironically, the best time they become unwell is when one is busy and there is a deadline to beat. Balancing family and work can turn out to be challenging especially with the high expectations placed on women with families.

I would like to have women that am in the same field with, that is in web development. Unfortunately, there aren’t many women in technology and any consultations are done with male developers. This can be quite challenging as some men are not very supportive and may even be intimidating.

All in all being a freelance web developer and a writer has been quite an interesting journey that I would follow again even if I went back in time. Most important is to set goals and know what you want and how to achieve the goals. Women should learn to break out of the cultural expectations and build confidence that will see them become successful while doing what they love.
