What is Mesothelioma and When Mesothelioma diagnosed/discovered ?


Mesothelioma is a type of cancer, though still rare, that grows in the lining of the lungs, abdomen or heart. No cure has been founded yet for this type of cancer and the person diagnosed with Mesothelioma has less life certainty. 32,400 people have died globally from this disease as per recorded until 2015. In India, there are more or less 100,000 cases of this cancer diagnosed per  year. It is rare.

Asbestos has been known to be the most prominent factor in leading to this cancer. Once the asbestos fibre does its job, there are high risks and chances for developing Mesothelioma.

How Mesothelioma diagnosed/discovered ?

The relation of Asbestos fibers and Mesothelioma was first discovered back in the 1970s and the US finally stopped the Asbestos manufacture in 2002 to lessen the spread of the fiber.

Types of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma, though being a type of  cancer itself, has three subdivisions according to the affected part or parts of the human body. Here are the three parts plus there symptoms-

1.     Pleural Mesothelioma

This is the most common form of Mesothelioma. Its affected part is the lungs. It is caused by the inhalation of Asbestos fibers. Symptoms –

  • Pain in the chest wall
  • Spitting out of blood while coughing
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Excessive fluid around the lungs and its lining
  • Wheezing

2.     Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Trapping the Asbestos fibers in the abdomen by either inhaling or swallowing the asbestos fibers. It affects the abdomen part and its grows about its lining. Symptoms –

  • Abdomen pain
  • Excessive fluid in the abdomen
  • Heaviness in the abdomen
  • Loss of Weight, drastically
  • Bowel function disorder

3.     Pericardial Mesothelioma

As the name sort of suggests, the cardial word is always related to the heart. Out of the three other types, this one is more rare to find. The entrance of Asbestos fibers in the pericardium, the lining around the cavity of heart, develops the cancer.  Symptoms –

  • Shortness of breath
  • Constant Coughing
  • Chest pain

What are the stages of Mesothelioma?

As we move across the stages of cancer, the deadlier and unpalpable the cancer becomes. Similarly in Mesothelioma, there are four stages of this cancer. If you have developed this cancer (we sincerely hope you don’t, in fact, nobody should), you better wish you don’t advance with tLikhe stages. The more advanced the stage, tougher is the curing possibily of Mesothelioma.

Stage 1: The fiber and tumours are lodged in only single parts and not spread or sprawled about other parts of the body.

Stage 2: The tumour has grown larger and has started affecting the nearby areas, however is not lethal yet.

Stage 3: Tumours have spread well in the local area and further nearby. It is getting more and more dangerous now and further spread would be lethal.

Stage 4: The tumours have spread into many areas and the lymphatic system, churning the fibers and cancer to evade many organs now. There is almost no way back now.

How to treat Mesothelioma?

Treatment of this cancer can be possible through anyother method when the cancer is in the first and second stage, however, the treatment in the third and fourth stage can be arbituary. Although the treatment has no assurities whatsoever, these treatments can be used to mitigate the pain or magnify the living span temporarily. These treatments also heal discomfort. Some people choose to cut their life span while they sleep in medic’s vigilance so as to prevent any conscious facing of death. Some common treatment methods are –

  • Radiation
  • Chemotherapy
  • Surgery
