BML Munjal University give you the opportunity to explore your strengths and interests not just in academics but also in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. We have a large number of clubs and societies that were launched by the first batch such as the Robotics Club, Scientific Research Club, Culinary club, Photography club, Videography club, Literary society, The Performing Arts club and Adventure club to name a few. Students also launched an NGO called Savera. You too will have the opportunity to launch new clubs and societies.
B.Tech Degree programs offer by BML Munjal University
Our first year students have told us that they appreciate the fact that our focus at BML Munjal University is on creating the best possible teaching-learning environment for students. Here are the elements of our approach:
1. Hands-on and problem-based learning – We have heard from a spectrum of companies – Fortune 500, start-ups, R&D organisations and others – and the common theme is that they are looking for graduates who have a practical, problem-solving approach. Thus, students at BMU are given hands-on, experiential learning situations in a more semi-structured approach, unlike the traditional classroom experience where students are expected to compete with one another or remain uninvolved, especially where instruction is highly structured. Classes are designed to engage students in hands-on experiences that are linked to real-world problems and situations, including through extensive laboratory and workshop exposure, where the instructor facilitates rather than directs student progress. Although the learning content remains important, experiential learning is at the core of the teaching process at BMU. In this process, students are guided to perform hands-on work; share their observations with their peers; and discuss, analyse and reflect upon their experience. The instructor is the guide and facilitator during the process of making the student realise and feel a sense of ownership for what she/he has acquired from the hands-on experience.
a. BML Munjal University Joy of Engineering (JOE) is a first year course that helps students to experience the fact that engineering is all about problem-solving, in a specific context. Students get an overview of the single most important aspect of modern engineering – design. JOE is a platform to develop small, innovative, virtual and physical projects to dissect or develop some ideas or products. The basic idea is to focus on design for purpose, as well as opportunities to create innovative solutions to realistic problems. Students have been asking for more JOE type courses, and we are offering Critical Reasoning and Systems Thinking in the 3rd semester to continue the experiential learning approach. This course has been appreciated by students and received strong coverage in the media. b. The 1st year Physics courses follow a three pronged hands-on learning approach:
i. Laboratory Work: Students are required to identify items in the lab and design experiments to verify the theories that were introduced in lectures. This allows students to think out of the box, and apply their theoretical learning in a meaningful manner.
ii. Computer Based Simulations: Simulations are used in class and as assignments for students. For example, a simulation of interference is used to showcase how light patterns change when they pass through various slits of different sizes.
iii. Design Project: Students are given design projects in order to allow them to apply their theoretical learning in a practical environment. For example, current students were asked to design a roller coaster track, and then present their designs to faculty. This involves applying knowledge across disciplines – including mathematics, computers, and physics.
c. The project for the second semester Written English course required groups of 25 students to stage their own play. They thought of the theme, scripted the play, practiced, directed and choreographed it; and the plays were staged as part of the Royal BML Munjal University Theatre Competition with the best three plays getting prizes.
d. In the first semester Maths course student teams learned Geogebra, an open source software. They used this to program the popular Angry Birds game, with the goal of getting a higher score. Along the way they learned that differential equations are required to mathematically describe the trajectory of the projectile in Angry Birds.
2. BML Munjal UniversityIndustry Linkage Programmes – BML Munjal University is focused on creating an immersive teaching-learning experience for its students, one that combines the best of campus-based learning with real life industry experience. This is best done by working closely with industry, since industry’s goal is to get job-ready graduates and our goal is to graduate students who are industry-ready and employable. We have thus created and implemented a hands-on curriculum, one in which industry is embedded right from the get-go. From the first year through the final year, students interact with industry both on-campus as well as off-campus. Here are some examples:
a. Centres of Excellence – These are being established by Industry on our campus to provide students and faculty with the opportunity to work on real-life projects and cutting-edge technology. An example is the on campus Siemens Centre of Excellence, which includes nine advanced labs. BMU has also tied up with Fraunhofer, Europe’s largest applied research organisation with 67 Institutes located world-wide, and with four CSIR Labs in India. These are indicative and there are several other companies and organisations with whom we’re in the final stages of discussion. The important thing is that industry and BMU must both gain from their association and see tangible benefits.
b. Practice School (PS) – This is an internship program that’s located in industry. BMU has adapted, extended and implemented the tried and tested Practice School model used in institutions like MIT (USA) and BITS, Pilani. Some of its salient features are:
i. Organised by BML Munjal University, rather than leaving it to an individual student to find a company where they can do practical training
ii. Applicable to all degree programs
iii. Integral part of the curriculum. The three Practice School internships are courses that have credit units and are part of the Grade Point Average. Total duration is about 29 weeks, comprising three Practice School courses of 1 week at the end of the first year, 8 weeks at the end of the second year and 20 weeks (an entire semester) in the final year
iv. This is an educational process and is monitored and evaluated by resident faculty members
v. Industry gets “industry-ready” students, particularly during their 22 week Practice School-3 course in the final year. It is thus assured of regular availability of fresh, young, energetic minds
In the first two years, 137 companies have participated in the BTech Practice School program.
Our first year students did their PS-1 at organisations including EXIDE Industries, RICO Auto, PARLE Biscuits Pvt. Ltd., OMAX Auto, POWERGRID Corporation of India Limited, MOSER BAER, DCM- Fenesta , LINDE GROUP, Munjal Showa Limited, Munjal Kiriu Industries Pvt. Ltd., FEDERAL MOGUL, Groz Tools, NAPINO, Surya Roshni Limited, AG Industries , Merino Laminates, Carrier Airconditioning & Refrigeration Ltd, JK Technosoft Ltd, Essel Shyam, DMRC, Burda Druck, Airport Authority of India(IGI- T3), Mother Dairy, OM Shanti retreat centre(Solar Plant), NTPC/APCPL, Relaxo Footwear and Hindustan Coca-Cola.
Our second year students are doing their eight-week long PS-2 at organisations such as: BHEL, Airport Authority of India, Airtel, Carrier, Daikin, Ericsson, Exide, HCL, Hero MotorCorp, L&T, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Steel, Tata Teleservices and WIPRO among others.
3. Faculty – The founding group of SoET faculty, all PhDs, have studied or done their post-doctoral work or taught, done research and worked at premier institutions in India including IIT-Kanpur, IIT-Delhi, IIT-Madras, IIT-Roorkee, BITS, Pilani, BHU, Jadavpur University, NITs, Delhi Technological University, Institute of Plasma Research and Pantnagar University, and abroad at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, Université de Valenciennes et du Hainaut-Cambrésis, Valenciennes, France, University of Texas, University of Idaho and Kansas State University. In the past year or so, the engineering and science faculty have had 16 research articles published or accepted in reputed SCI-indexed journals.
4. Holistic development – BMU helps each student develop one’s own value framework. We have courses such as Ethics and Values and Good Citizenry. Our first year students also take a course titled World Civilisations; this semester they went on a field trip to Farrukhnagar as part of their course project which resulted in an innovative exhibition on campus. Apart from the course work, all students are encouraged and supported to participate in various co-curricular, sports and extra-curricular activities. We already have 20+ student run clubs and SPIC-MACAY is active on campus. A unique program titled BMU Ambassadors provides students with the opportunity to participate as members of the BML Munjal University admissions team at open houses and education fairs.
